developing and compiling Artoolkit applications

I am running Artoolkit 2.11 on windows XP with microsoft visual studio 6.0 and directx 9.0 SDK.

I can get the precompiled simpletest to work but i am having trouble compiling the simpletest in visual studio and getting it to work that way.

does anyone have any pointers for developing AR applications, compiling and running them in visual studio?

You'd be better off trying with ARToolKit 2.70. http://artoolkit.sourceforge.net/

The reason is that version 2.11 is rather old and not many people are running it and therefore won't be able to help you with that version.
