Hi Guys
I was working with ART 2.69 under Windows XP and MS VCC 6.0 and everything were fine. Now I would like to do some tests with ART 2.71.
I compiled all the project perfectly, but when I want to start one of the example from Visual C++, I have got the following error :
"Debugger Detected - Please close it down and restart!
Windows NT users : please note that having the WinIce/SoftIce service installed means that you are running a debugger!"
I did not installed this debugger, maybe Visual C++ did...?
What does it mean?
- I can not use VCC 6 anymore with ARToolkit new release?
- If I can not debug what I am doing, How can I work?
Thanks for answers...
bye

Hi again, the function that generate this message is "ar2VideoOpen(config)" and the message does not appear in every case...
I work on my laptop under Windows XP, I have a build in USB webcam named "CMM PC Camera", my config parameter for webcam video setup is empty : Config == "" and it works under ART 2.69. It does not show me any windows or any message. Webcam takes default parameters I guess(64?*480*15 FPS).
If I say that Config == "showDlg", it shows me config panel, but when I confirm, I got error msg "debugger WinIce...." and it stops.
I tried with a logitech Webcam, and it doesn't work in both case config=="" or config =="showDlg" under Visual C++ 6. But work correctly using bineries.
I didn't re-run all the camera calibration programs for the new web cam, may it have some effects for this problem..?
I hope this new informations can help...

Hi Barend,
It seems your are not using ARToolkit, but the video game "pirates of the caribbean", so this is not directly related to the topic and the forum, but the fact that this error appears in different applications is good to know.
Are you using some developpment application on your computer? What are they? Ty to remove them....
I don't know if this will help cause I did not fix the problem myself....
Good luck and let me know....

I had exactly the same problem. And after a lot of investigation I found the cause. You probably have NERO BURNING ROM 6 installed on your computer. Yes, I know this sounds strange (that's what I thought) but after downgrading again to NBR 5 the problem was gone.
I tried installing it again and the problem appeared again. So that was the absolute cause. Try it and let me know if it helped.

Hi Yarniso, you are right !!
The probleme comes from NERO Burning Rom 6, I uninstalled it and every thing went right!! I mean before, I could not ask the application to show the webcam setup dialog box while starting under Microsoft Visual C++ 6, and now I can!!!
Thanks a lot for this tips...I think this uncompatibility should be writen somewhere and maybe explored.
Greetings

Okay, nice. I think this is one of the strangest "bugs" I ever found. :)
I don't think ARToolKit has anything to do with this (I'm not sure though). I think this is a purely NBR related issue but it might be worth investigating.
Good luck with your work.

Thank You !! I stumbled onto this board by accident. This error also occurs when starting The Sims Makin Magic.
Protection Error
Debugger Detected - Please close down and restart
Windows NT Users: Please note that having the WinIce / SoftIce service installed means that you are running a debugger!
Uninstalling Nero 6 solved the trouble.
I CAN PLAY AGAIN!!
I wonder why Nero caused this?
Off to contact EA games next.....THANK YOU! :D

Is there a way to shut Nero off without uninstalling it? It came with my computer, and I do use it sometimes, but I don't have a disc to reinstall it later with. But I really would like my Sims game to work!! MowMowsGirl >^.,.^<

I also deleted Nero, but it didn't help me, what else can I do??? I have had this same problem in the past, and fixed it somehow, but I don't remember how. And the game has been played, and on my computer for a few years at least, so why is it doing it again?? I have the Sims 1, with these extentions...Unleashed, Hot Date, House Party, Making Magic, and Deluxe. It may have been a Direct X problem (An update needed with Direct X), or an NVIDIA problem but since I have an invalid Windows XP now, and not enough money to get it valid, I can't update Direct X to try it. If anyone else can try it, then let me know if that works. And if I find a solution, I promise to write it on here, for anyone else with this annoying problem. Stacy >^.,.^<

This error is caused by DivX 5.1 and it is a bug of this release of the DivX codec.
The codec is actually what's showing the error message. You can uninstall DivX 5.1 and upgrade to the current release (or downgrade to v5.05), and you will no longer have this problem. It looks like that some versions of Nero software includes this codec version internally. Therefore, having it installed can also cause the same problem.

Thanks, works when deleting nero but is there a way to shut it off instead of uninstalling every time?

I deleted nero, but still it doesn't work. Do you guys have any idea what could I do? I can say for sure, that I'm not running a debugger.

Hello all,
I too have encountered this problem and you do not have to completely uninstall Nero Burning Rom to fix this. It is possible to keep most of the functionality of Nero and run ARToolKit apps as well. :)
The problem is that Nero installs a DirectShow filter which uses a protection scheme (AsProtect (http://www.aspack.com/asprotect.html)) to prohibit their code being run in a debugger. It sees Visual Studio as a debugger and kills you application.
As far as I can tell the troublesome filter is NeVideo.ax, which you can find in: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\DSFilter (assuming default install directories etc...).
I renamed this file to "NeVideo.ax.old" and the problem went away. :)
I haven't noticed any reduced functionality in Nero Burning Rom, although I only do simple CD/DVD burning. If you use any of the multimedia functions of Nero, you might run into problems after renaming its DirectShow filter. Perhaps someone could try it and report back.
Good luck,
Julian.
