The Human Interface Technology Laboratory New Zealand (HIT Lab NZ) is a human-computer interface research centre hosted at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. The lab is a partner of the world-leading HIT Lab US based at the University of Washington in Seattle and the most recent HIT Lab AU based at the University of Tasmania in Launceston.

The lab is also part of the Biomolecular Interaction Center (BIC) and the New Zealand Institute for Language, Brain and Behaviour (NZILBB) world-class leading research institutes at the University of Canterbury.

What is the focus and the mission of the lab?

The HIT Lab NZ is revolutionising the way people interact with computers, by creating cutting-edge interfaces to:

  • enhance human capabilities
  • vanquish human limitations
  • increase the flexibility and utility of industry's existing products

The HIT Lab NZ's multi-disciplinary approach to research and education facilitates an entrepreneurial climate, which fosters a wealth of innovative ideas. Currently the lab is working on a range of Projects in collaboration with industry and academia. The lab has state of the art interface technology and world-leading research Facilities.

One of the HIT Lab NZ's key goals is to expedite economic development within New Zealand by transitioning breakthrough interface technologies to industry.

What are the research subjects explored at the lab?


The HIT Lab NZ conducts basic and applied interface research in the following areas:

  1. Virtual and Augmented Reality
  2. Interactive Visualization
  3. Next Generation Teleconferencing
  4. Applied Interaction Design


These new technological innovations will increase human capabilities by accelerating people’s ability to learn, to create, to communicate and conquer physical barriers and limitations of all kinds.

Leading-edge technologies developed in the Lab find application in areas such as education, science, communication, entertainment as culture or in the medical domain.

What are the social and community values of the lab?

The HIT Lab NZ has its own Outreach Program, bringing awareness to the general public, communities and schools of the technology created at the lab, emerging interactive technologies and helping shape future generations of interactive designers. In parallel, we are also supporting a Volunteering Program to give a first hands-on research in human computer interface using emerging technologies.

The lab is also fervent supporter of Sustainability.

Finally the lab is also engages in a lot of Social activities, like fund-raising, universities social actions or some entertaining events for the HIT Lab NZ people.
