Oakley spends his Ph.D. working on an outdoor Augmented Reality joint project between the HIT Lab NZ and Trimble Navigation NZ Ltd. He focuses on outdoor AR user interfaces that allow automated apropriate information display and navigation aid, both of which are distinct features of outdoor AR interfaces.
Oakley holds a B.Sc. degree in Computer Science from the University of Hamburg and has completed his Postgraduate Diploma at the University of Canterbury with distinction.
His frustration with annoying and unusable computers made him choose Human Computer Interaction as his field of study. He hopes that Augmented Reality, with its unique interaction style can overcome some of today's interface problems.
In his spare time, Oakley tries to avoid computers and spend time outdoors instead. He does not always succeed though.
