This project explores how a children's book can be transformed into a new type of reading experience through the use of Augmented Reality technology. Internationally recognised New Zealand children's book author and illustrator, Gavin Bishop, has produced a picture book, Giant Jimmy Jones, which will be enhanced with three-dimensional virtual content using the HIT Lab NZ's MagicBook technology. The aim of this research is to explore whether a reader's experience is enhanced when they view the three-dimensional animated content.

  • The ARToolKit tracking library
  • Real time 3D rendering techniques
  • Augmented Reality headset displays

The eyeMagic work is an art piece that demonstrates the benefit of collaboration between artists and engineers. As such, one benefit is the exposure of authors to new technology that could enhance their story telling. In addition, this the work will serve as the focus for an education program that will be used to teach children about three-dimensional modelling and spatial concepts.

  • A public MagicBook installation of the Giant Jimmy Jones picture book
  • A week-long workshop teaching children to build their own content for the Giant Jimmy Jones Magic Book.
  • An exhibition of the children's work

Future research will explore ways for readers to interact with 3D content.
