From HIT Lab NZ
HIT Lab NZ put on a two-day workshop on 9 – July for ten children as a part of the KidsFest Uni for Kids holiday programme. The programme was run by Charles and Ting Ting Chen with support from Hartmut Seichter and other HIT Lab staff and students. The children created their own 3D virtual models and then launched their rocket creations into an immersive virtual reality environment using the Lab’s Vision Space. The HIT Lab NZ students and staff were very impressed by the enthusiasm and abilities of the participating 10-year olds, and challenged by their energy levels.
Ting Ting reports that during the 3D modelling workshop the junior explorers were toured around the art & science of making 3D animations and mixed reality technologies. Budding the techno-whizzes at the Lab, they got to create their own 3D models and compose them into an Augmented Reality environment, where they 'placed' and 'moved around' their colourful 3D rockets on their own desk. They then launched their models from a virtual spaceship and took their rocket on a journey through an immersive virtual reality environment.
